Powered almost entirely by volunteers in more than 30 local Leagues across Texas, we work to make voting and civic participation more accessible for every Texan.

Nonpartisan does not mean being neutral on critical policy issues. We do take positions on issues — reached only after our members carefully study them — and we advocate using those positions.

Our Vision Is Shaped by Shared Principles:

Our vision is shaped by a shared set of Principles that define what the League believes democratic government should be. They are not positions on individual laws or issues. Instead, they provide the foundation for the League’s work at every level.

These Principles guide how local, state, and national Leagues choose issues to take action on and support. They help keep all of the Leagues connected around shared beliefs about voting rights, transparency, public participation, equal access, accountable government, and other key elements of a strong democracy.

LWVTX HISTORY

When Congress passed the 19th Amendment in June 1919, national suffrage leader Carrie Chapman Catt knew that winning the vote was only the beginning.

Carrie called for a new organization that would help women become informed, engaged voters and active participants in democracy.

Texas women answered that call on October 19, 1919. Meeting at the St. Anthony Hotel in San Antonio, they dissolved the Texas Equal Suffrage Association and formed the League of Women Voters of Texas, along with five founding local Leagues in San Antonio, Houston, Galveston, Austin, and El Paso.

Led by Georgetown’s Jessie Daniel Ames, the Texas League’s first president, the new organization made voter education its first priority. LWV Texas was one of the first state Leagues in the nation—founded four months before the national League of Women Voters was officially organized in February 1920. More than 100 years later, that mission remains the same.
